The Policy and Advocacy Intern will support the policy and advocacy efforts of the organization resulting in supportive local, and state policies and investments in Out of School Time Learning. This position will will observe, learn and support the President and CEO by performing a variety of duties and participate in varied activities in preparation, during and after the Indiana Legislative session. The intern will have the opportunity to hone research and writing skills, strengthen communication skills, participate in event coordination, improve networking skills, and apply skills to address Out-of-School Time access involving regulatory and legislative issues as well as coalition work to advance access and funding for OST. This is a great internship for students in Government, Political Science, Public Affairs/Administration and Law with passion for making a difference in the Indiana youth.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Administrative

Assist with supporting the work of the AYS Advocacy Council, including taking meeting minutes, preparing agendas, scheduling meetings, issue focus groups and other activities as assigned

Research issues related to Out of School Time Learning in Indiana and assist with developing cases for support, talking points and white papers.

Maintain legislative and Advocacy database

Provides project support as needed

Performs all other duties as assigned

Leadership

Serve as a positive and guiding force that supports AYS's mission, vision and values

Drafting communications to legislators and partners, attending committee hearings, writing summary briefs, researching various issues, and assisting with additional office duties as assigned.

Coordinate bill tracking and monitor progress of legislative priorities and communicate status to president and CEO and other key individuals as assigned.

Supports strategic planning process and reporting.

Ensures/maintains strict confidentiality standards.

Must be enrolled in at least a bachelor's program or transitioning to graduate school.

Knowledge of the legislative process

Ability to work collaboratively with the office staff, key individuals and/or organizations/agencies on legislative-related issues;

Prior experience working in a fast-paced office environment with multiple deadlines;

Top-notch writing skills.
